Title

Avant to Live! Craig Baldwin/Other Cinema Digital Collection

Subject

Craig Baldwin, Other Cinema

Description

Other Cinema is an underground film/video exhibition series founded by filmmaker Craig Baldwin in 1985. Still active as of 2022, Other Cinema presents approximately 36 programs annually at the storefront community arts space Artists’ Television Access, located at 992 Valencia Street in San Francisco. Known for its passionate and expansive curatorial vision and contrarian stance toward the mainstream culture of media consumption, Other Cinema is known for its engagement with marginalized forms of film history, including activist media, expanded cinema performance, speculative lecture presentations, screenings of films from Baldwin’s own archive, in-person artists and more. Cinematheque’s Other Cinema Digital Collection consists of material digitized by Cinematheque in the course of creating Craig Baldwin: Avant to Live! documenting Baldwin’s work on Other Cinema. Materials include seasonal exhibition calendars, promotional ephemera, curatorial notes and artifacts, signage and other material related to the history of Other Cinema.
